While there is plenty to do on the doorstep, including some lovely, local woodland walks, and the beach only two miles away, the proximity of the A75 makes travel easy to the many attractions within Dumfries & Galloway.

The Galloway countryside is rich in its diversity, with hills and valleys, fields and sea, and there are many ways to enjoy it.  Possible sporting activities include walking, mountain-biking, golf and watersports. We get many visitors here for the birdwatching either locally or at the RSPB reserves nearby. Our visitors book has many mentions of Red Kites being spotted.

A more leisurely visit or two to the nearby towns of Kirkcudbright (the “Artists' Town”) and Castle Douglas (the “Food Town”) is strongly recommended, as well as many other attractions, including some lovely gardens to visit locally, including Cally Gardens (walking distance), Threave, Castle Kennedy, Woodfall and the Logan Royal Botanic Garden.  Approximately one mile from the cottage, is the Cream O' Galloway visitor centre, with indoor playbarn, adventure playground and cycle routes, and the finest ice cream in the land!

Mountain bikers will be interested in the routes offered by the World class routes offered by the Forestry Commission's 7 Stanes centres. Additionally,
Girthon is on National Cycle Route no 7.

There is a 9 hole course in Gatehouse and an 18 hole championship course 5 miles away in Borgue.  Southerness is one of Scotland's finest golf courses and is only 30 miles away
